Sharing the JJ Love

08/29/2013

Greetings fellow rockstars! One reason why I love being a part of the JJ team is seeing the smiling faces of Jimmy John’s fans. As you can see, 5-year old Oliver LOVES Jimmy John’s:

That gap-toothed grin was more than convincing, and I was stoked when I got to send him a birthday box of his very own JJ swag:

Just when I thought Oliver’s smile couldn’t get any bigger, his dad posted this to the JJ Facbook page:

Totally made my day!!! Thank you, Boyce family, for being JJ fans for life. Maybe one day Oliver will be a JJ Rockstar! Call me in 10 years if you need an internship, kiddo!

Meet a Rockstar: Carl Buergler

08/26/2013

Carl Buergler is coming up on 12 years with Jimmy John's. He started as an Assistant Manager at the Stadium store in West Lafayette, IN and now he runs all 28 of Jimmy's Corporate Stores and sells franchises as the VP of Development & Corporate Operations. This rockstar has played football at Purdue with Drew Brees, and also sold Drew Brees his very own Jimmy John's franchise. Check out his rockstar story:

Carlb
How did you get started at JJ's? I was hired by a recruiter after applying to a job posting on Monster.

What other positions have you had at JJ's? Assistant Manager, GM, Area Manager, Training Manager, Sales Associate and now VP of Development and Corporate Operations.

What do you love most about your job? I love developing people, motivating them to compete, and watching them grow. There is no greater experience than hiring an employee as an hourly employee, develping that person, and once they've earned it promoting them to a GM position running a million dollar store!

What do you know now that you wish you knew then? I wish I would have known how critical it was to recruit the best of the best and to be aggresive with it. In my early years I waited for employees to "STEP UP" and come to me and ask to be managers. And not all of them were the best of the best. Jimmy has taught me that we don't wait for employees to "STEP UP", instead it is our job as leaders to "PULL THEM UP". These days we aggresively recruit the best of the best hourly employees and "PULL THEM UP" to our manager ranks.

What is your favorite JJ's sandwich? #16 with cheese and dijon, no lettuce

If you could describe yourself in a #hashtag, what would it be? #COMPETE

Best advice to future JJ's Rockstars? Be a competitor! Rockstars like to compete at everything. Strive to be the best at everything you do. It's not just about sales and comps. Go for the highest peak scores. Be great at enforcing the dress code 100%. Motivate your team through friendly competition. Catch your team doing things right and reward them for kicking ass!

Like father like son!!

The Skype Interview

08/22/2013

Skypemackenzie

Ah, the 21st century.

Thanks to Skype, in-person interviews are a thing of the past for companies seeking non-local employees. Not to say in-person interviews are long gone, but Skype has certainly came up as an accessible tool for long-distance interviewing. And it makes sense—Skype is a way better fit for today’s modern world of efficiency.

But, like most sparkly new technology, Skype interviewing has its drawbacks. Here are the worsts and bests of The Skype Interview:

Worsts

1. “Technical Problems”
The greatest problem of all. Trust me I know, I’ve experienced it first hand. Occasionally, Skype just does not like to cooperate—the video isn’t working or the sound isn’t working. This proves to be quite frustrating. But don’t worry! If the sound is working, your potential employer can always tape a picture of you on the screen. It’s basically the same, right?

2. Nerves
Video interviews are different from in-person interviews, and may be a little intimidating. Sometimes being on camera makes people uncomfortable—it’d be a shame to ruin a good interview because of nerves!

3. Accessibility
Despite the techno-trends of today’s society, some people may not have access to a webcam. Guess it’s back to the old school phone-interview, or even better, the ancient in-person interview!

Bests

1. Convenience
There’s no denying that the Skype Interview is the most efficient way for long-distance employees. It is more flexible than scheduling an in-person interview. Nonetheless, always dress professionally!

2. Saves Travel Costs
Skype allows face-to-face interviewing from the comfort of the home or office (just make sure you're in a clean, quiet area!). That means no money for gas, plane tickets, or hotel rooms!

3. Time Saving
Ultimately, Skype interviewing is the quickest interview process for long-distance interviewing. Not only can employers conduct multiple interviews more efficiently, but also employees may know the status of their interview sooner. It is mutually beneficial.

So download Skype and create an account if you haven’t already, and start practicing with your friends or family! Happy interviewing!

Meet a Rockstar: Rachel Eckert

08/19/2013

Rachel Eckert is coming up on her 10 year anniversary with Jimmy John's. This rockstar spent 3 years working her butt off in the stores through college and the past 6 1/2 years working at JJ Headquarters as Payroll Manager. She handles payroll for approximately 1,200 employees at the corporate store level! Check out this badass chick's story:

Rachel
What was your first job? My first job was in 2000. I was 16 and was a cashier at Jerry's IGA in Urbana, IL

How did you get started at JJ's? I was desperate for a job in college and applied to work at a new Jimmy John's in Columbia, MO and was hired on the spot!

What other positions have you had at JJ's? I started as an Inshopper my sophomore year of college. By senior year, I was PIC'ing 3 closing shifts a week and inshopping and driving when needed. I started in the corporate office as a Staff Accountant and was promoted to Payroll Manager 8 months later.

What do you love the most about your job? I love that I have the opportunity to work with our area managers and store managers on a daily basis. Without our operators, I wouldn't have a job, and I'm privileged to have formed both personal and professional relationships with so many of them.

What do you know now that you wish you knew then? How much of my paycheck would go to taxes and health insurance.

What is your favorite JJ's sandwich? #6 no mayo

If you could describe yourself in a #hashtag, what would it be? #I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T

Best advice to future JJ Rockstars? Never half-ass anything. Whether you're filing, scanning, answering phones, stocking water, whatever, do it to perfection or don't do it at all. Those little things you do are going to get you noticed and enable you to move up!

Meet a Rockstar: James North

08/12/2013

Meet James North, the President of Jimmy John's. Freaky fast delivery was meant to be for James. His very first job was a Pharmacy Delivery Guy - delivering prescriptions on his bike in New Zealand. Then he met Jimmy. Jimmy told James that he should come work for him. When James asked why, he said it was because "he was going to teach him to be the best restaurant operator in the world". At that point James was sold on JJ's, Jimmy and the brand, and decided to join him.

James North

What other positions have you had at JJ's that got you to where you are now? Night Manager, General Manager, Area Manager, Franchisee, Director of Research & Development, Real Estate Manager and Chief Operating Officer.

As President of Jimmy John's, give a glimpse of what you do? I run the day to day operations of Jimmy John's removing obstacles for my team, specifically the 17 department heads that report directly to me on a daily basis.

What do you love the most about your job? Hiring delivery drivers and inshoppers and promoting them to be department leaders. There's nothing better than seeing people achieve extraordinary things.

What is your favorite JJ's sandwich? #9 add hot peppers

If you could describe yourself in a #hashtag, what would it be? #DADOFTWO

Best advice to future JJ Rockstars? Put your head down and outwork the person next to you. Focus on perfecting the small little details of each and every project or task. People notice the small stuff.
